The typical rhetoric of the mid-century liturgical authors was that we ought to build churches for the “modern man” or “constructed to serve men of our age.” Styles and forms from previous ages were declared defunct or no longer vital. Given the clear intent expressed in this motu proprio of Saint Pius X as the point of departure for the 20th-century Liturgical Movement, how are we to explain the subsequent diminishment of the church building as a sacramental sign of the heavenly realities? In the mind of Pius, the church building ought to be constructed to express the majesty and dignity of the House of God. Among other things, the means include that the liturgy is done well in a place aptly designed for worship. Active participation properly understood is the goal of worship in the liturgy - it is the end not the means. 1įor Pius X, “the sanctity and dignity of the temple” was important so that the faithful might acquire the proper spirit for true “active participation” in the holy liturgy. Nothing should have place, therefore, in the temple calculated to disturb or even merely to diminish the piety and devotion of the faithful, nothing that may give reasonable cause for disgust or scandal, nothing, above all, which directly offends the decorum and sanctity of the sacred functions and is thus unworthy of the House of Prayer and of the Majesty of God. Pope Pius X reminds the faithful of the importance of the church building in the formation of the Christian soul through the Christian liturgy:Īmong the cares of the pastoral office … a leading one is without question that of maintaining and promoting the decorum of the House of God in which the august mysteries of religion are celebrated, and where the Christian people assemble to receive the grace of the Sacraments…. 1914) in his 1903 exhortation on sacred music, Tra le Sollecitudini. The notion of “active participation” as the genesis of the twentieth-century liturgical reforms was first articulated by Saint Pope Pius X (d. It is historically curious that the desire to promote active participation of the faithful came to imply a radical reductionism in the majesty, beauty, iconography, and symbolism of church buildings. Some interpreted this to mean that the Church should emulate the early Christian Church in their liturgical practices and its surroundings - that the architecture should be simplified to heighten the symbolic expression of the gathered community, and architectural “accretions” through the centuries should be removed as nonessential, distracting, and counterproductive to the goal of “active participation.” The intention of the ressourcement (return to the sources, i.e., the early Church) movement was to recover the true meaning of the Christian liturgical assembly and the true meaning of Christian assembly space. This was not accidental, but rather a deliberate effort to return to what mid-20th century liturgical scholars considered the true character of Christian worship as understood in the early Church. In the last century we have seen a steady devolution of Catholic sacred architecture from grand and formal edifices to decidedly more residential-scale and casual buildings. and how this has influenced modern Church architecture

History Initial releases (1990–2004) Ĭhemlab's first release was the EP 10 Ton Pressure, in 1990. Chemlab toured as opening acts for Nine Inch Nails from 1990 to 1991 for the Sin tour, which was a part of the greater Pretty Hate Machine Tour. After releasing the albums Burn Out at the Hydrogen Bar (1993) and East Side Militia (1996) on Fifth Colvmn Records, Chemlab broke up in 1997 and then later reformed in 2004 to release an album entitled Oxidizer (album) with Jared as the only original member. Intermittent touring (2004–2012) Īfter a seven-year hiatus from the stage, Jared recreated Chemlab and, with a backing band composed of the members of electro-industrial group mindFIELD performed a one-off show in Boston, Massachusetts in August 2005. The band played another one-off show, this time in New York City on January 7, 2006. The band played at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and the Blacksun Festival.Ī third show in San Francisco on March 17, 2006, saw the band joined by fellow coldwave bands Babyland and Deathline International. Jared Louche announced on stage during a performance on Septemin Chicago, that it would be the band's final show. In the spring of 2018, it was announced that Chemlab would return for Cold Waves VII in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles to perform Burn Out at the Hydrogen Bar in its entirety to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the album's release. The band also performed at Cold Waves VIII, along with a number of other standalone shows. The band later released the compilation Tape Decay in 2019. Outdoor Christmas Lighted Decorations and Decor. “It's all about greed and their desire to maximise profits.”įurther mutterings compounded community bewilderment. “What benefit could this possibly have if it was functional?” says Chaz, who’s been playing the game since 2006. “What fuels the outrage the most is the lack of understanding and transparency from Sulake and Azerion,” says Malva, referring to Sulake’s sole shareholder, which hid critical tweets and blocked several respected players over the festive period. Sulake did not respond to a request for comment for this story. Sulake’s auto-generated replies and inclination to redirect players to an FAQ page didn’t improve matters, a practise which persisted even as #SaveHabbo began trending on Twitter. Users believe the changes were financially motivated, and that they represent a misjudged focus on new players that has led to mass disenfranchisement. Hundreds took to Twitter to disagree, arguing that the changes provide even more incentive to trade externally. “Rare prices continued to rise in the months before the update because of the heightened demand from new players,” he says. Harry, who accumulated a pre-update credit stockpile that would cost over £20,000 to purchase from Habbo directly today, says the news had little effect on an in-game economy that retained its “bullish” summer character. But as disquiet amongst the platform’s old faithful simmered, the markets remained stable. “It’s a mess,” says a spokesperson for the United States Defence Force agency (the game’s largest military simulation), which lost up to fifty users after the update yet continue to soldier on. Agencies and corporations within Habbo, some of which have hundreds of workers, now only have a ‘donation’ function to pay their staff with, which tops out at nine credits and costs one to use. Players were angered further when this change was combined with tax hikes of up to 59 per cent on the game’s most expensive items (Sulake has now u-turned on these), an 80 per cent wealth tax on withdrawals from the new ‘Vault’ feature, and the removal of marketplace sales statistics. The decision to centralise trading in the official marketplace was akin to a real-world government shutting down shops and telling business owners they could only sell their goods in one, enormous state-run supermarket. “Hell broke loose when in October, it was leaked that the bartering system was going to be removed,” says Kriegberg, a former player with over a decade of experience in the game, who despaired at the decision to remove one-to-one trading, an economic cornerstone that had been in place for over 17 years. But few could have predicted what was to come. The change had been a long time coming Habbo’s Finnish developers Sulake first broke the news of such a plan in 2018. Rosy forecasts were, however, tempered by an impending update and move away from the platform’s Flash client, scheduled to be discontinued and replaced with Unity by the end of 2020. “My items skyrocketed in value due to a tonne of users coming back”.įor long-serving traders like Malva, the vibrant economy was cause to celebrate. “My in-game wealth essentially doubled,” says Malva, a player who co-founded The Coin Club, a 2,300-strong group created to re-energise the economy in periods of decline by setting members ‘wealth targets’. “When a lot of older players came back into the game, it meant a lot of items that were missing for years came back into the game” recalls Alastair, who initially joined Habbo in 2004 and returned during the pandemic, likening the appreciation in value to bitcoin. The platform’s population soared by 213 per cent between late February and late March, and the influx of nostalgic returnees revitalised the game’s comparatively stagnant economy. An article in Finnish business paper Talouselämä published in October of last year claimed Habbo had 850,000 players, but judging by recent player statistics, it looks more likely to be in the tens of thousands, 70 per cent of whom are adults.īefore Habbo’s end-of-year chaos, the platform had experienced a player surge as lockdowns came into force during the early months of 2020. In the face of adversity, Habbo’s loyal community typically trundles on – but accurate estimates of its size are increasingly elusive. A lack of moderation has put users in danger in the past, whereas scams, which the game’s terms of service dismiss as victim-induced ‘user errors’, are as common as you’d expect in a virtual environment purposefully designed to be hyper-consumerist. But eh.Įdit: Here's an example of an utter failure that illustrates my hypothesis: it mixes a song that has a traditional verse/chorus/verse structure with a techno track that's a monotonic crescendo. It somewhat feels that this has more to do with the predictable sequence of verse/chorus/verse bars in pop music. Only one has vocals and it comes out way out of tune, but the general development of the songs fits well. So I tried to mix two guitar-heavy songs that were bound to be incompatible and the results are kind of okay. But I don't see the creative aspect of music dying just because we built a machine to organize some stuff better for us. I can even imagine a world where the independent singer/songwriter suddenly becomes more capable than ever, with AI allowing them to orchestrate entire film scores by just playing a piano or a guitar into their computer. The truth is, compositions have classically exploited the modern technology of the day to their own advantage, and I don't see that stopping anytime soon. There are entire orchestras that are paid almost the same salary as developers, yet the Vienna Symphonic Library lets a single person on a keyboard play an entire orchestra's score. Think about it: There are still _professional_ drummers out there, people just paid to drum, when drum machines exist. Perhaps playing music will be somewhat more automated in the future, but history shows that creating music will just become more complex and more interesting as we continue forward. We're also DJs/producers, and as a DJ, I somewhat disagree with AI ever taking our music-creating jobs. Along with Agent Zero, Worldtown Soundsystem, and several other bands in the Philadelphia area, we make up a vibrant "live electronic" scene united by the way we make music, not by the genres of music that we particularly choose to write and play. We're very far from computers being able to improvise (well), and 4-5 humans playing live instruments is just a crowd-captivating visual. But for now, I'm satisfied that there's a bit more to the depth of DJing than that what an AI can learn.Īgreed! I'm in a band called The Wonder Bars, and we play house music live with real instruments, but we also include drum machines. When the tool comes along that can style-transfer two songs in the same way that it can for images, then I will admit that AI is on the verge of taking our music-creating/music-playing jobs. That's just really scratching the surface of what a lot of "live" DJs do (as they're called these days), as many are bringing instruments like drums and saxophones (see Big Gigantic), keyboards and vocoders (see Lorenz Rhode), their voice (see Gallago), and traditional African drums (see Black Motion), let alone simple song selection and set progression - "reading the crowd". One thing that it does do is take away the turntable GUI (or hardware) and replace it with a two-field upload form, radically reducing the amount of know-how required to perform beat-matching. Beat matching is the easiest part of DJing, and that's about all that this tool does, so I don't think it's solving any DJing problems specifically. At great risk of sounding haughty, as someone who's perhaps a bit more into the DJing scene than what's probably the average HN user, all of these sound horrible.
